Nicotinic acid and its derivatives (pyridylcarbinol, xanthinol nicotinate, acipimox) activate endothelial lipoprotein lipase and thereby lower triglyceride levels. At the start of therapy, a prostaglandin-mediated vasodilation occurs (flushing and hypotension) that can be prevented by low doses of acetylsalicylic acid.
The plasmalemma of cardiomyocytes extends into the cell interior in the form of tubular invaginations (transverse tubuli). The trigger signal for relaxation is the return of the membrane potential to its resting level.

 

As a peptide, insulin is unsuitable for oral administration (destruction by gastrointestinal proteases) and thus needs to be given parenterally.
